Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or (EMDR) is a powerful psychotherapy that was designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. During the session, the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential patterns while focusing on an external stimulus such as a light, tone, or tactile stimulation. EMDR facilitates the accessing of the traumatic memory network so that information processing is enhanced and becomes more adaptive. These new associations forge an elimination of emotional distress within the person.
